This structure is often categorized into two-layer (2L), 2.5-layer (2.5L), and three-layer (3L) fabrics, and has a crucial impact on garment performance, comfort, weight, and lifespan.
Regardless of the style, the core technology lies in the bonding structure, primarily composed of three key components:
• Outer Fabric: The outermost fabric, typically made of nylon or polyester, providing strength, shape, and abrasion resistance. It undergoes a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment, causing water droplets to condense and roll off the fabric, also determining the product's appearance and feel.
• Waterproof and Breathable Membrane: The membrane sandwiched inside the outer fabric is crucial for waterproofing and also allows for the wicking away of sweat and other water vapor. Suitable for various activity levels and climates.
• Inner Layer: Located on the innermost layer, it protects the membrane from abrasion and damage from body oils. Depending on the structure, two-layer garments have a separate lining, 2.5-layer garments use a protective printed coating, and three-layer garments have a complete backing fabric. This component directly affects wearing comfort, durability, and packability.
While these layers are meticulously crafted, they are not necessarily separate fabrics. Most styles, especially 2.5-layer and three-layer structures, bond the layers together into a single, integrated fabric, resulting in a seamless, one-piece performance.

Compared to 2L fabric, 3L fabric is stiffer and heavier, making it suitable for activities where durability and weather protection are paramount, such as mountaineering, rock climbing, or long-distance expeditions.
